Being Present: Family Walk Edition

Wednesday, October 8, 2014

Almost everyday our family of 4... 5 if you count the furry one, take a walk together. The kids jump in the double stroller, I throw on some comfy pants, the kind with looots of stretch, James grabs his baseball cap, and we walk.

Normally these happen right after we get home, but tonight that wasn't the case. We got home late because of work and as soon as we walked in the door it was complaining, crying, not-sharing, dress pulling madness. You know the kind of stuff that makes you want to throw in the parenting towel and just watch some youtube videos of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon while holding a cold beer.

Yeah, it was like that. James and I drudged through it as best we could, only loosing our cool every now and then, but then we surrendered and threw in a movie and hoped for the best, because, honestly, when things get bad and LOUD, that's what you do. You beg for some calm and quiet and a chance to sit.

But it didn't work.

I mean it did for the 15 minutes we all sat down to eat our dinner, but then the two-year old started to screech for us to take him out of his high chair and the four-year old started screeching about all of the screeching.

So we aborted the original plan and got both kids in the double stroller. I put on my comfy pants, James grabbed that baseball cap and we got the hell out.

And this amazing thing happened. The kids stopped complaining, everyone could relax. We saw friends from the neighborhood as we walked down the sidewalk. It was familiar and comforting and calming, and all good.

We created the present moment we needed for us, this family of ours and it was so good.

I'm proud of that, of us, of this thing we've created and this place we call home.
